Dr. Maura Marcucci is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact (HEI), and Department of Medicine at McMaster University. She is an attending physician in the Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) and Division of Perioperative Care. She is the Research Director for the Division of GIM.

Training and previous employment

Dr. Marcucci is an internationally trained internist (Italy). She completed an MSc in Health Research Methodology and a clinical fellowship in Hematology/Internal Medicine at McMaster University. In 2013-2016 she was attending physician and faculty member at the University of Milan, Department of Internal and Geriatric Medicine.

Research interests and recognitions

Dr. Marcucci has published 117 articles in peer reviewed international journals. They cover topics in internal, geriatric, cardiovascular, and perioperative medicine, and clinical epidemiology & biostatistics. Her H-index is 38 (Google Scholar). She has knowledge and experience in designing and conducting observational studies and randomized controlled trials with adult and older participants. She has performed systematic reviews and meta-analyses. She has been involved in qualitative and mixed-methods studies.

Leveraging on her background in vascular medicine, thrombosis and hemostasis disorders, and geriatric medicine, her main research focus is cardiovascular and functional outcomes of older people undergoing noncardiac surgery, with a focus on neurocognitive disorders and frailty. She is a Scientist at the Population Health Research Institute (PHRI), working with the Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine, and Surgical Research Group. She is also part of the PHRI Centre for Global Digital Health and member of the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA). In 2018 she received an Internal Career Research Award from the Department of Medicine, and she now holds a Mid-Career Clinical Research Award from the PSI Foundation. Since at McMaster, she has secured $909,382 in competitive funding competitions as principal investigator (PI); and more than $10,000,000 as Co-Applicant or Co-Investigator (Co-I).

She is currently the project officer of the 10,000 patient PeriOperative ISchemic Evaluation (POISE)-3 trial, and (PI) of the POISE-3 substudy on postoperative delirium and cognitive decline, for which she holds a CIHR Project Grant. She is the PI of the FARGO study (Frailty Assessment for Risk prediction in Gynecologic Oncology patients undergoing surgery and chemotherapy), and of the ArthroCaP study (a mixed methods study on Chronic Post-surgical Pain, Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction and Resilience in older people undergoing elective knee surgery). She will be leading the NeuroVISION (Neurological Impact of CerebroVascular Events In Noncardiac Surgery Patients)-2 study, investigating risk factors and mechanisms of perioperative covert stroke and neurocognitive disorders. She is co-investigator in other large national and international studies in perioperative medicine, including the CIHR-funded VISION-2, HIP-ATTACK-2 and ASPIRE-AF studies.

Teaching

Dr. Marcucci is coordinator and lecturer for the course 721 in the Health Research Methodology (HRM) Program, a mandatory course on Fundamentals of Health Research and Evaluation Methods. She currently supervises or co-supervises 4 PhD students in the HRM program. She has so far supervised more than 15 MD and other undergraduate students in their research internship/elective/project course. She is also tutor and supervisor of residents and medical clerks in their clinical rotations in GIM Clinical Teaching Units.
